The ground sits in the Neustadt district of Hildesheim . It opened in 1930 after the local workers' club Freie Sportliche Vereinigung Hildesheim built it.

One of the few numbers that still carries weight is the attendance record. It was set on November 5, 1961, when VfV Hildesheim beat Hamburger SV 3–0 in the Oberliga Nord . The crowd was 26,000, and the German striker Uwe Seeler later called the place a tough nut to crack. The stadium picked up a Tartan track in 1977 and has kept a natural grass surface ever since. The 2015 refresh added a new drainage system and a proper tunnel for the players.

It hosted the first DFB-Pokal match in 47 years last August when VfV 06 Hildesheim played SV Elversberg in front of 5,186 fans. The ground is also the base for the Hildesheim Invaders American football team.
