Goodman Stadium
Bethlehem, United States
The entrance to Murray H. Goodman Stadium is defined by three matching gatehouses, each topped with a green, peaked roof supported by cream-coloured beams. A stone wall runs between these structures, and a sign set into the brickwork bears the name of the ground. Behind the gates, the stadium sits within a bowl of trees, the hillside rising steeply to the rear.
The scoreboard, seen from the outside, is a blocky, brown structure that announces the rivalry of the day with simple lettering. It displays "Lehigh" and "Guests" rather than specific opponent names, a reminder that the ground is best known for the local derby against Lafayette. Placed along the base of the scoreboard wall are white banners listing championships; they speak of a history measured in decades. One banner notes a run of league titles, while another lists the years the Mountain Hawks reached the post-season.
The capacity has grown since the doors first opened. It started at 14,000 and reached 16,000 in 1989, a figure that has not changed since. When the building work finished, the first match was against Cornell, and the crowd of 13,501 stayed to watch a win. The ground later hosted the Philadelphia Eagles during their training camp for nearly two decades, drawing thousands of fans to watch the pre-season preparations. It also saw the US national team play, losing to Ukraine in a friendly that went unnoticed by most at the time.
The surface beneath the players is natural grass, a field that was completely redone in 2009 with a new irrigation system. The stadium was named after Murray H. Goodman, a local developer who donated 550 acres of land in Saucon Valley to the university. The record crowd of 19,110 came to see the 127th Lehigh-Lafayette game, a match that has always held more weight than the result.
