The ground sits high above the city. It is not an enclosed bowl, but an open structure. The name on the building carries two weights: the original dedication to L. T. Smith, and the more recent sponsorship of Houchens Industries.

The brickwork of the main stand is old, while the newer seating sections to one side are rendered in flat concrete. You can see the banners hanging under the roof of the main stand, marking the 2002 I-AA National Championship as a point of pride. The pitch itself is a sheet of green, shortened for the eye by the perspective, but the white numbers painted on the turf run deep into the distance.

The water tower is the most distinct feature of the skyline here, and the club sign for the Harbaugh family sits atop the press area, looking out over the field. The scoreboard is a modern block of glass and steel, but the flagpoles around the perimeter are older, catching the wind as the teams march out. The ground has seen the game change from natural grass to artificial turf, but the architecture of the stands has stayed largely the same since the turn of the millennium.

It is a place that feels closer to the ground than many of the newer venues, where the fans are not separated by a vast distance from the action. The entrance gates are marked simply, and the walkways lead directly into the seating areas without the maze of concourses found in larger arenas. The history is written on the banners, but the feeling is of a place that has grown with the university, not one built from scratch for a tournament. It sits in Bowling Green, overlooking the town, and has hosted championship games and commencements alike.
