Kinnick Stadium
Iowa City, United States
Formerly: Iowa Stadium
That renovation added a tiered seating area to the north end, replacing the old general admission bleachers and narrowing the capacity from a previous record of 70,585 to the official 69,250. The structure was designed by Proudfoot, Rawson, and Souers, who opened it on 5 October 1929.
Inside, the pitch is not natural grass. The University switched to FieldTurf in 2009 to solve persistent drainage issues, and the surface has been replaced twice since to keep up with the flooding. The playing area is officially Duke Slater Field, though the stadium remains Kinnick Stadium, named in 1972 for the Heisman winner who died in the war. An earlier attempt to honour him as Nile Kinnick Memorial Stadium was made in 1945, but the university did not pursue the change then.
The capacity swells beyond the seated figure on the ‘hill’ areas during sellouts, where standing room only tickets are sold. It has hosted a concert, a wrestling dual meet, and a women’s college basketball game that drew 55,646 fans to set an NCAA record. The address is 886 Evashevski Drive.
