M. M. Roberts Stadium
Hattiesburg, United States
Formerly: Faulkner Field
M. M. Roberts Stadium sits at 118 College Drive in Hattiesburg. Built by local unemployed workers with materials donated by businessman L.E. Faulkner, the venue cost the university nothing to erect. It opened on October 29, 1932, and remains in use by the University of Southern Mississippi.
The playing surface is artificial turf; specifically, RealGrass Matrix Turf, installed in the summer of 2013 following damage from an EF-4 tornado on February 10, 2013. Previous iterations included Momentum Turf. The capacity stands at 36,000, a figure established after an expansion in 2008 added nearly 4,000 seats in the south end zone.
Brett Favre made his first collegiate start here on September 19, 1987, against Tulane, leading three scoring drives for a 31-24 victory. On October 31, 1987, the stadium hosted the first game between one of Mississippi's "Big Three" schools and a Historically Black College/University, drawing 33,687 fans for a 17-7 win against Jackson State. The official attendance record belongs to a different kind of pressure: September 5, 2015, when 36,641 people watched Southern Miss fall 36-14 to the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
The venue also hosts annual Drum Corps International competitions and MHSAA State Football Championships, though its primary role remains the home of the Golden Eagles. The official website for the venue and athletics is southernmiss.com.
