The stadium itself is older than its modern trappings suggest, having opened in 1968 under a different name, though the current configuration owes much to a volunteer effort in 1980 that added ten thousand seats to the southern bowl.

What makes the ground distinct today is the sheer scale of the southern stand.

The facility has shed several skins since its dedication as Romney Stadium. The most recent transformation occurred in 2015, when a three-story premium structure rose on the west side, housing luxury suites and a press box. This modern addition sits juxtaposed against the older concrete tiers. The field is marked with "Merlin Olsen Field," a tribute to the local legend who played for the San Francisco 49ers, but the official branding on the scoreboard and perimeter advertising boards identifies it simply as Maverik Stadium. The capacity has settled at 25,513, a number that has not changed since the southern expansion, even as the interior amenities have shifted from wooden benches to aluminum and plastic.
