The stadium is not merely large; it is the result of a single-minded expansion that began in 1927. Green, held 72,000 spectators when it opened on October 1 of that year. Within a year, the capacity was pushed to 85,752, and the process of adding tiers continued for nearly eight decades. The current configuration, which accommodates 107,601, dates from a renovation completed in 2015.

What distinguishes the ground is the sheer volume of concrete required to hold the crowd. The playing surface is artificial turf, a change made in 2003 that replaced the natural grass used for eleven years. Before that, the pitch had been covered in another layer of synthetic material since 1969. The surface has never been natural grass since the modern era of maintenance began.

The stadium has hosted events outside the college game, including the 2014 NHL Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings. That match drew 105,491 spectators. A year later, an International Champions Cup fixture between Real Madrid and Manchester United saw 109,318 people in the stands. The official attendance record of 115,109 was set on September 7, 2013, for the Michigan versus Notre Dame game.

The 2010 renovation added 83 luxury boxes and 3,200 club seats, along with a new press box and permanent lighting. The structure has never sold naming rights, remaining known simply as Michigan Stadium or, by local habit, The Big House. The stadium has been the home of the Michigan Wolverines since its opening, a tenure that has spanned nearly a century.
