O'Shaughnessy Stadium
Saint Paul, United States
The pitch at O'Shaughnessy Stadium carries a name that outlived the war that delayed its construction. Palmer Field has been the playing surface since 1948, though the ground beneath it changed in 2004 when natural grass gave way to artificial turf. A new FieldTurf surface followed in 2017, alongside a 400-metre Beynon track that now runs between the goal line and the stands.
Only one side rises above the track. The Fowler Veranda on the east end holds 238 seat-back chairs and was originally bleachers before becoming a premium area in 2012. The main grandstand opposite it contains the remaining 550 chairs. Beyond that, 4,237 bleacher seats fill the south and north ends. The total capacity sits at 5,025, though the original number from 1948 is not recorded anywhere.
The stadium opened in 1948, after construction began in 1940 and the south wall stood alone for seven years. World War II pushed the finish date back. The design came from Ellerbe & Co., with the Edward Dunningan Co. doing the building. It bears the name of Ignatius O'Shaughnessy, a graduate and philanthropist who donated $8.5 million to the university that owns the ground.
The record crowd of 12,483 came on September 14, 2014, when temporary bleachers went up in both end zones for a game against Saint John's. It remains the highest number. The University of St. Thomas Tommies play their home football and track and field matches here, competing in NCAA Division I. Nothing professional has ever used the pitch for soccer; the local MLS franchise plays at Allianz Field down the road.
A large video board appeared in 2023, replacing the one that came before it.
