The exterior is defined by concrete retaining walls, a shape that gives the ground its nickname, The Horseshoe. Visitors entering through the gates pass under arches that lead into the stadium, where the field sits level with the surrounding city streets.

While the structure is often associated with American college football, the ground has hosted other sporting codes over the decades.

The current number follows a series of renovations that included the addition of luxury suites and the installation of permanent lighting in the south end zone.

The building stands on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
