Olympia Park

The ground in Rustenburg does not announce itself with grandeur. When you walk through the entrance at Olympia Park, the first thing that catches the eye is the weight of the stone archway. The blocks are rough and worn, fitted together with a roughness that suggests they have been there a very long time. You are not looking at new steel and glass; you are looking at a site that has absorbed the sun for thirty-five years.

The pitch sits under that history. It is natural grass, kept flat by an automatic irrigation system that runs quietly in the heat. The ground has a way of holding onto the memory of the summer of 1995, when the Rugby World Cup came to this part of South Africa. The crowd of 20,000 packed into the stands for the match between Ivory Coast and Scotland still feels substantial, even if the numbers have drifted down since then. It is a cramped space, but one that feels complete in itself.

Today the atmosphere is quieter. The main tenants are the players from Orbit College, who have moved up through the South African leagues to the Premiership. They run their drills on the same surface that hosted the giants of the 1990s. The stadium has never needed a new name or a major rebuild; the City of Rustenburg has simply let the place stand. It is not a temple of football, but it is the only ground of its size in the town. When the wind comes off the hills behind the stands, it carries the sound of the ball cracking against a boot, and that is enough for the day.
