Peden Stadium

The Perry and Sandy Sook Academic Center sits against the hill, its balcony crowded with spectators who look down across the players.

The stadium opened in 1929 as the Ohio University's Athletic Plant before the name changed to Peden Stadium in 1946. The playing surface switched from natural grass to artificial turf in 2002. The capacity grew slowly as the stands expanded, reaching the current figure after the track was removed and the pitch lowered. The academic building added a further layer to the layout, creating a grass berm for overflow seating that stretches across the south end of the ground.

The field itself carries the name Frank Solich Field, honouring the coach who held the position for 17 years. The Mid-American Conference has seen many teams pass through these gates, but the structure has remained anchored to the university. The stands rise in tiers of concrete and metal, with the older brickwork contrasting against the newer additions.

Cheerleaders move across the sideline near the grassy incline, while others gather on the balcony above the press area. A cannon sits on the field, a reminder of the traditions that still play out on the artificial surface. The surrounding trees frame the ground, keeping the noise contained within the brick walls and the open stands. It is a place where the history of the university sits alongside the daily grind of the season, visible in the wear of the steps and the sharpness of the new paint.
