Pioneer Field
Tusculum, United States
Pioneer Field is an old-fashioned multi-purpose layout: a red running track wraps around the pitch, and the stands rise in wide, flat banks of blue metal seats behind the touchline.
The pitch itself is a bright green rectangle. The goalmouth is defined by rows of yellow and black chairs set up in the stands, a temporary arrangement for when football is the main event.
Located in Tusculum, the ground is not a modern arena but a functional track and field facility that borrows the turf for autumn games. The hillside above the stadium offers a different experience from the flat plains found elsewhere in Tennessee, catching the wind and giving the place a sense of enclosure. It is a working stadium for Tusculum University, hosting the Pioneers, but the atmosphere is more academic than commercial. The yellow chairs are the only splash of colour in the stands, and the red track is the most striking feature of the perimeter.
It is not a ground that hides its age. The lighting is functional, the seats are basic, and the view from the upper tier looks out over the town and the distant hills. It is a venue that serves a university community, not a city population, which is why the focus is on the track and the local fixtures. The hillside is the constant feature, a reminder that this ground was built into the landscape rather than the landscape built around it.
