Rose Bowl
Pasadena, United States
Formerly: Tournament of Roses Stadium, Tournament of Roses Bowl
The Rose Bowl does not sit in a city centre. The bowl shape itself, closed off in 1928, gives the place its name and its character. Inside, the sight is dominated by the long, sweeping rows of seats.
Its history is written into the structure. The original horseshoe design was completed to form the bowl that stands today. Before that, it hosted the Los Angeles Galaxy of the Major League Soccer (MLS) . But its identity was forged in college football, cemented by the annual New Year's Day game that has been played there since the stadium opened.
The ground has hosted the highest number of Super Bowls of any venue in the United States, with six matches staged within its boundaries. Yet the event that gives the stadium its global weight is the FIFA World Cup . It hosted the final of the 1994 tournament on home soil. The stadium has also staged the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1999. It is scheduled to do so again in 2026.
What remains is the pitch itself. The stadium's capacity has shifted over the decades, trimmed back from its peak to the current official figure, but the scale of the bowl remains.
