Salem Stadium
Salem, United States
Formerly: Willis White Field at Salem Stadium
Salem Stadium is located in the James E. Taliaferro Sports and Entertainment Complex at 1001 Roanoke Boulevard. It opened in August 1985 and has never been rebuilt.
The surface is artificial, replaced with FieldTurf in 2015 after years on natural grass, but the structure around it remains solid.
The stadium became famous for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Football Championship, known as the Stagg Bowl. The event lived here for 25 consecutive years, from 1993 to 2017, turning a local high school venue into a national destination. The crowd of 7,992 for the 2001 final set a record that still stands. The weather often played a part; the inaugural game in 1993 was played in a wind chill of minus 30, and a 2009 match was delayed by a major snowstorm.
Today, the ground hosts the Salem High School Spartans and, since 2024, the revived Roanoke College Maroons. The field itself is named Willis White Field, honouring a former coach. There is no commercial name on the building, which keeps it distinct from the nearby Salem Memorial Ballpark.
