Sanford Stadium
Athens, United States
Sanford Stadium has never carried a sponsor’s name, remaining university-owned through every expansion from 1929 to the present. The playing surface is Tifton 419 Bermuda Grass, a variety the venue has maintained since the opening match against Yale.
A large LED scoreboard dominates one end, while the upper tier stretches across the opposite side in a continuous concrete block. Temporary aluminium bleachers are sometimes added in front of the scoreboard to accommodate extra guests, as occurred for the match against Notre Dame.
The pitch itself bears the name Dooley Field, a designation given in 2019 to honour Vince Dooley, who served as both head coach and athletic director. The stadium hosted Olympic football matches in 1996, though the hedges that usually line the pitch were removed for the tournament and replanted afterward. There have been occasional concerts, but the venue remains primarily a football ground, with a capacity that reached 93,033 following the most recent renovation completed in August 2024.
