Saxon Stadium
Erie, United States
Formerly: Tullio Stadium
The ground sits on the campus of Mercyhurst University, and while it hosts several side, the most recent shift was the move to NCAA Division I. That elevation brought new scrutiny, but the setting itself remains the same.
The stadium was not built for this moment. It opened in 1996 as Tullio Stadium, replacing the old Erie Veterans Memorial Stadium. It was renamed in 2019 after a renovation paid for by a gift from John and Patty Saxon. That money bought new synthetic turf, LED lighting, and new seats, but the concrete skeleton was already there. The capacity is 2,300, which is tight enough that attendance records sometimes show more people than seats, likely owing to standing room near the sidelines.
The pitch is artificial. It is FieldTurf, durable and consistent, but it does not carry the weight of history like a natural surface might. The Erie Express football team uses it now, as do the Commodores FC soccer teams, but the primary tenants are the Lakers. The facility is functional, quiet, and unpretentious. It does not demand attention. It simply hosts the matches.
