SECU Stadium
College Park, United States
Formerly: Byrd Stadium, Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium, Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium
What distinguishes this ground from the others in the region is its history, written in the names on the building and the surface beneath. The concrete shows its age, but the turf is comparatively young, a flat green sheet of FieldTurf that replaced the natural grass in 2012. Before that, the surface has worn through several sponsorships, shifting from Byrd Stadium to Chevy Chase Bank Field and eventually to SECU Stadium. The name changes track the university’s politics as much as its commercial needs, with the removal of the original founder’s name in 2015 marking a shift in the institution’s public face. The architecture, too, tells a story of incremental growth rather than a single grand rebuild. The lower tiers are older concrete, while the upper decks and the suite building beyond them are newer additions, layered on top of the original structure.
There is a quiet permanence to the place that is unusual for a modern American stadium. The stands are long and narrow, and the sky is often visible above the western rim, exposed to the wind that comes down from the north. It is not a new arena built for a World Cup, nor is it a renovated relic of the pre-war era. It is a working stadium, updated over decades, where the old concrete seating abuts the newer luxury boxes without a seamless transition. The ground is not always full; on an afternoon like the ones captured in the photographs, the vast expanse of grey seats can look almost cavernous, the players on the field small against the backdrop of the brick tower and the blue sky.
