The ground earned its nickname early on. It has not kept its original shape since the 1930s, though the rebuilding is so gradual that no one remembers a time when the bowl was smaller. The most recent overhaul is already being planned, a billion-dollar project set to begin in 2026, but the aim is to keep the capacity hovering around 88,000 rather than change the character of the place.

Visitors often remark on the proximity of the stands to the touchline. There are no wide gaps or safety zones to soften the view; the players on the grass are close enough to hear the calls coming from the upper decks. The pitch itself is natural grass, maintained in the damp Florida air, and it shows when the rain comes through.

Football is not the only event that fills the seats. Concerts have drawn crowds large enough to make the ground feel like a festival site, and the 50th edition of the Gator Bowl in 1995 brought a freshman quarterback from Tennessee to play out his last rookie season before heading to the NFL. The rivalry with Florida State carries its own weight, and games between the two teams have drawn crowds that still sit at the top of the record books.

What stays in the memory is not the number of seats or the history of the expansions, but the way the crowd reacts when the home side is under pressure. They do not let up, and the pressure tends to build toward the visiting team. The stadium has seen plenty of those moments, and it has kept its nerve through them.
