The Sun Bowl has a long history with the annual college football game that bears its name, which moved here in 1963. It replaced the previous home of the UTEP Miners, Kidd Field, and has been the primary tenant’s home ever since. The stadium has seen changes over the decades, including a major renovation completed in 2021 that added a new press box and luxury boxes. The playing surface is currently artificial turf, a change from the natural grass that covered the pitch for its first decade. The official capacity is 45,971, a figure that has fluctuated since the stadium’s opening, when it held 30,000 and was later expanded to 52,000.

Events beyond football have been hosted here, including concerts by artists such as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and BTS. The latter took place in May 2026 and drew an estimated 97,700 attendees, marking the largest concert event in the stadium’s history. A simulcast of Pope Francis’s visit in 2016 was also shown, drawing crowds to the stands. The stadium is owned and operated by the University of Texas at El Paso, and while it has always been known as Sun Bowl Stadium, the annual bowl game has carried various sponsored names over the years.
