The Racecourse Ground

The Racecourse Ground wears its age in the way the stands sit close to the road.

What sets the place apart is the history recorded in the grass. The club has played here since 1864, and the ground itself is the oldest international football stadium still in continuous use for such matches. It hosted Wales' first home international against Ireland in 1877, and on that pitch, Mitchell and Kenyon filmed the earliest surviving footage of an international football match in 1906. The surface is natural grass reinforced with a GrassMaster hybrid system, a modern addition to a site that once hosted horse racing and early aviation displays.

The recent rebuild of the Kop end has altered the shape of the ground. The historic terrace was demolished in 2023, replaced by a temporary stand funded by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. A permanent replacement is under construction, part of a wider project aiming to meet UEFA standards by the 2026/27 season. The pitch was also repositioned two meters toward the new stand as part of a £1.7 million overhaul completed in August 2025.
