University Stadium
Albuquerque, United States
Formerly: Dreamstyle Stadium
This is a ground that studied its own landscape. The architect, W.C. Kruger and Associates, worked within the constraints of the arroyo.
The surface changed in 2012, when the natural grass was replaced with FieldTurf. The new surface has no heating system. The capacity has shifted several times since the early 2000s. Portable bleachers donated by the city pushed the numbers past 39,000 in 2004, but the final arrangement settled at 39,224.
One thing the stadium does not do is hide its age. The primary tenant, the New Mexico Lobos, plays here, but the ground also carries a history of international matches. The American teams have used this space for games against Mexico, Ecuador, Chile and Honduras. The attendance record, however, belongs to a different kind of game.
The naming rights changed hands recently, with the arena briefly known as Dreamstyle Stadium before reverting to its original name in 2020. The stadium remains where it is, between the university and the city, holding its events from college football championships to concerts.
