Valerie Park

Prescot, United Kingdom

Formerly: Cables Field

The ground sits on Eaton Street. It is a place that has been bought back from the edge of disappearance, saved by the local council when the previous owners would not extend the lease. That intervention in 2018 kept the club playing, providing a 99-year lease and a loan that unlocked further funding for the facilities. The main stand, which replaced a wooden structure that burned down in the mid-twentieth century, is now nearing the end of its life and will require rebuilding.

The pitch itself is natural grass, the standard for this level of play. Prescot Cables F.C. have shared this patch with others over the years. The ground was originally called Cables Field, named after the local industry that employed much of the town, before it was renamed for Valerie Georgeson, the wife of the club chairman at the time.

There is a quiet tension in the numbers here. The licensed capacity for league matches is 2,070, though the total ground can hold 3,200 when standing terraces are included. The record of 8,122 for a match against Ashton National in 1932 has stood for nearly a century. The relationship with the wider game has been sporadic; the club reached the First Round of the FA Cup twice in the 1950s.

For the supporters, the ground is simply where the matches happen.
