Villanova Stadium
Villanova, United States
Formerly: Goodreau Field (field name since 1930)
Villanova Stadium has stood at the edge of the campus since 1927. The original structure was modest, but the ground has adjusted to the times, replacing its first artificial layer in 2002 and installing the current FieldTurf surface in 2010.
What separates this venue from the standard collegiate arena is its history with professional sports. The field hosted the Philadelphia Charge in the early 2000s, drawing a crowd that filled the stands for the 2001 home opener. Later, the Philadelphia Barrage played here, winning championships during their tenure. When the Waterdogs arrived in 2024, the same grass used by Villanova’s own football team again became a professional stage.
The stadium sits at 185 Ithan Avenue. The Andrew J. Talley Athletic Centre, opened in 2016, sits adjacent to the main structure, providing a modern contrast to the older grandstands. Inside, the stands are painted in colours that match the university’s identity, and the press box was expanded in 1999 to accommodate growing media needs.
The pitch itself carries the name Goodreau Field, dedicated in 1930 to honour a player lost to tragedy shortly before the stadium’s opening. The relationship between the field and the player’s memory has endured longer than many of the teams that have played upon it. The ground does not hide its age; the concrete and steel show the wear of constant use, from the muddy days of the 1950s to the bright lights of modern lacrosse matches. It remains a place where the local community gathers, whether for a college game or a professional final, though the crowds have varied greatly over the years.
