W.B. Mason Stadium
North Easton, United States
W.B. Mason Stadium sits in North Easton, Massachusetts, where Stonehill College has built a campus. The artificial surface was laid down in 2018, a decade after the place opened, and it carries the name of the Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field. That name is not a marketing decision; it marks a class of 1980 alumnus who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center.
Stonehill switched from the Chieftains to the Skyhawks in 2005, the same year construction began. The 400-meter eight-lane track wraps the pitch. Cheerleaders in white and blue outfits often line the sideline, which keeps the focus on the college rather than on a professional franchise. The stand has a small press box, but the real weight of the place comes from the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship that was held here in 2009, a tournament that drew attention beyond the local college circuit.
The stadium replaced Chieftain Stadium, which served the college from 1988 to 2004, so this is not a relic. It opened on September 9, 2006, and has never been renamed. Visiting teams such as the Bryant Bulldogs and Sacred Heart Pioneers have played here, but the ground is not built for a city; it is built for a campus that wants its own space.
