Wildcat Stadium
Abilene, United States
ABILENE, TEXAS sits in the centre of the state, and the stadium reflects that geography in its scale and materials; there are no hills to hide behind, only a wide, blue sky and a concrete plaza. The building’s facade is dominated by a large grid of blue-tinted windows, flanked by vertical columns of darker panels that give the structure a sense of weight it would not otherwise carry.
The ground itself was never intended to be a permanent fixture for the community, but rather a showcase for the university that moved here from Shotwell Stadium after more than fifty years. Construction began on February 19, 2016, and the venue opened on September 16, 2017, with a game against Houston Baptist University. The project cost $50 million and was designed by HKS, Inc., with Hoar Construction serving as the general contractor. The pitch is covered in FieldTurf Revolution with cool-pellet technology, an artificial surface that remains consistent regardless of the weather. The seating bowl holds 12,000 spectators, a capacity that sits between the massive college stadiums and the smaller high school grounds that use the site for playoff games.
There are no trees immediately surrounding the structure, only a few young saplings planted along the perimeter paths. Tall floodlight towers rise above the seating area, their lights positioned to illuminate the playing field without casting shadows across the concourse. The scoreboard visible in the distance is simple and functional, displaying the name Weisel Scoreboard. The architecture avoids ornamentation, relying on the clean lines of the metal cladding and the transparency of the glass to define its character.
