About
The NBA G League serves as the official minor league system for the National Basketball Association. Founded in 2001, the competition began as the National Basketball Development League before undergoing several name changes to reflect its evolving role within professional basketball. Today it operates under a sponsorship agreement with Gatorade, a partnership that has defined its modern identity since 2017.
The league comprises 31 teams spread across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It functions as a closed system without promotion or relegation, meaning team positions remain fixed based on affiliation agreements with NBA franchises. Most clubs operate under a single-affiliation model where they are directly owned by their parent NBA club, while others serve as partner teams with exclusive development rights. This structure ensures that player movement is tightly controlled through two-way contracts, allowing athletes to split time between the top tier and the developmental circuit.
A regular season runs for 50 games, divided into Eastern and Western conferences. The competition concludes with a 16-team single-elimination playoff tournament, ending in a best-of-three Finals series. Recent reforms have aimed to increase excitement, including the adoption of a "Final Target Score" in overtime to remove clock management strategies from the final moments of games.
The Rio Grande Valley Vipers hold the record for the most championships with four titles. The Greensboro Swarm are the current champions, having secured the title in the 2025–26 season. The league remains unique among international basketball competitions due to its direct integration into the NBA's salary cap and roster rules, maintaining a high level of organizational control by the parent league.
