The Basketball Africa League operates as the premier professional men's basketball club competition on the continent. Organized jointly by NBA Africa and FIBA Africa, the tournament sits above domestic national leagues while remaining distinct from the FIBA Basketball Champions League Africa. The competition currently features twelve teams representing the breadth of African basketball.
Qualification relies on a dual mechanism. Six teams enter directly based on market size and basketball history, typically drawn from nations such as Angola, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal. The remaining six places are secured through the "Road to BAL" qualifying tournament. Once qualified, the regular season divides the clubs into three conferences: Sahara, Nile, and Kalahari. Each team plays a round-robin schedule within its group. The top two teams from each conference, alongside the two best third-placed sides, progress to a single-elimination playoff. This knockout phase culminates in a "Final Four" held in a centralized host city.
The competition has evolved significantly since its inception. The inaugural season took place in 2021, initially structured as a single-location tournament. By 2024, the format had shifted to the current multi-conference model. In 2025, the finals moved outside Rwanda for the first time, hosted in Pretoria, South Africa. Past champions include Zamalek, US Monastir, Al Ahly, Petro de Luanda, Al Ahli Tripoli, and RSSB Tigers. No promotion or relegation exists within the BAL itself. However, the champion earns a spot in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. While the NBA has announced intentions to transition toward a closed franchise model in the future, the league remains open-qualification as of 2026. The structure is distinguished by its NBA partnership and centralized playoff approach.
