About

The Úrvalsdeild karla stands as the premier men's professional basketball league in Iceland. Administered by the Icelandic Basketball Federation, it serves as the highest level of domestic competition for the sport. The tournament traces its origins to 1951, with play commencing in 1952 under the name 1. deild karla before adopting its current title in 1978.

The league features twelve teams competing in a regular season schedule where every side plays each other twice. This results in twenty-two matches per team. Following this, the top eight squads enter the playoffs, known as Úrslitakeppni. These knockout stages utilize a best-of-five series format across the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals to determine the national champion.

KR holds the record for success with eighteen titles. Njarðvík follows closely with seventeen, a tally that includes four won under the former name ÍKF. ÍR has claimed fifteen championships. Valur emerged as the reigning champion for the 2023–2024 season. The structure includes promotion and relegation links to the second tier. The bottom two clubs drop to the 1. deild karla, while the champion of that division earns promotion to the top flight.

The competition remains distinct from the Icelandic Cup, which operates as a separate knockout event. Historical shifts in the league include the adoption of the playoff system during the 1983–84 season. The tournament continues to evolve while maintaining its status as the central stage for Icelandic basketball. Clubs such as Akranes IA, Alftanes, Armann, Grindavik, IR Reykjavik, and Keflavik participate in the current campaign.
