About

The Lietuvos krepšinio lyga stands as the premier men's professional basketball league in Lithuania. Founded in 1993, it operates at the top level of the national basketball pyramid. The competition features a quadruple round-robin format where each of the nine participating clubs plays every other team four times, resulting in a 44-game regular season. This structure ensures extensive home-and-away fixtures before the top eight teams advance to a playoff tournament to decide the champion.

A distinct feature of the league is its unique European qualification pathway. BC Žalgiris Kaunas holds a long-term licence for the EuroLeague, while the highest-placed non-Žalgiris team qualifies for the EuroCup. The subsequent two positions secure entry into the Basketball Champions League. This arrangement sets the league apart from others in Europe regarding continental competition access.

Although a formal promotion and relegation system exists with the second-tier National Basketball League, it is rarely implemented in practice. This is primarily because National Basketball League champions often fail to meet the strict financial and infrastructural licensing requirements set by the premier league. Recent exceptions include promotions for BC Jonava and BC Gargždai, though financial stability remains a recurring challenge for clubs entering the top flight.

BC Žalgiris Kaunas dominates the historical record, having won 26 titles as of the 2024–25 season. BC Rytas Vilnius holds seven titles, while no other club has secured the championship. The league’s cultural significance in Lithuania is high, with basketball deeply tied to national identity. Sponsorship has evolved over time, with the competition recently known as the Betsson-LKL following a name change in 2025.

The number of teams has fluctuated between eight and thirteen throughout its history, with recent reductions attributed to financial issues. Notable individual records, such as those held by Mindaugas Lukauskis, exist within the league but do not define the overall structure. The focus remains on the regular season intensity and the subsequent playoff contention for the national title.
