About
Liga Dos operates as the second-tier professional basketball league in Chile, sitting directly below the top-flight Liga Nacional de Básquetbol, commercially known as Liga Chery. The competition was established to create a structured pathway for promotion, distinguishing itself from the closed franchise system of the top tier by allowing competitive ascension.
Founded in 2017 with its inaugural 2017-18 season, the league has evolved significantly since its inception. Initially featuring fewer teams, the competition expanded to approximately 23-24 teams in recent seasons such as 2025 and 2026. The regular season is divided into two geographic zones: Zona Centro, covering the Santiago Metropolitan Region and central valleys, and Zona Sur, covering southern regions. Teams play within their zones, and the top teams from each zone advance to zonal playoffs. The champions of the Central and Southern zones then face each other in a National Finals series to determine the overall Liga Dos champion.
Promotion is automatic and direct. The winner of the Liga Dos playoffs earns immediate promotion to the Liga Chery for the following season. There is no relegation from the top tier to this second division in the traditional sense, as the top tier operates on a franchise model, but the second division serves as the exclusive feeder league. Key clubs participating in this tier include Aleman de Concepción, Antofagasta, Árabe Valparaíso, Boston College, Colo-Colo, and Sportiva Italiana. The 2020 season was suspended due to the pandemic.
The league's official name has included sponsorship ties, most recently as "Liga Dos by Cecinas Llanquihue." The league's primary distinction from the neighboring top-tier competition is its open promotion mechanism and its role as a developmental and regional hub for Chilean basketball, contrasting with the more commercialized, closed nature of the Liga Chery. Notable champions include Deportivo Boston College, Español de Talca, Tinguiririca San Fernando, Español de Osorno, Liceo Pablo Neruda, Colo-Colo, and Puerto Montt Básquetbol.
