The Basketligaen stands as the premier tier of men's professional basketball in Denmark. It operates under the authority of the Danish Basketball Association, which was established in 1947. The competition's roots stretch back to 1957, when the first national first division was created. The modern professional structure, bearing its current name, began in 1998 after a transition period that included sponsored iterations.
Twelve clubs contest the title in a double round-robin regular season comprising 22 games. Following this phase, the league divides into two distinct groups. The top six teams enter the Mesterskabsspillet, or Championship Round, while the bottom six compete in the Kvalifikationsspillet, known as the Qualification Round. Points accumulated during the regular season carry over into these subsequent stages. The Championship Round determines the national title, with the top four qualifiers advancing to best-of-five semifinals and a final. The Qualification Round focuses on survival, where the last-place team faces relegation to the 1. Division, contingent upon meeting specific financial and sporting criteria for promotion.
Bakken Bears hold the record for success within the league, having secured 24 titles throughout its history. Their victories span various eras under different club names, including Aarhus Basketball Forening and Skovbakken. Historical high-points include BMS Herlev's five consecutive championships between 1986 and 1990, as well as singular triumphs by Svendborg Rabbits in 2010 and Horsens IC in consecutive years during 2015 and 2016.
The league maintains a clear distinction from the Danish Men's Basketball Cup, a separate knockout competition founded in 1975. While the women's equivalent, Kvindebasketligaen, follows a similar path to the top, it utilises a different format with fewer teams and distinct playoff structures. The current season features clubs such as Amager, Bakken Bears Aarhus, Bears Academy, Copenhagen, Herlev Wolfpack, and Holbaek.
