Superliga (Venezuela) 2025/26

The Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto stands as the premier professional basketball competition in Venezuela. Established in 1974 to transition the sport from regional state-level play to a national standard, the league has undergone several structural transformations. It began as the Liga Especial de Baloncesto before becoming an independent private entity in 1993. After a period of fragmentation in 2019, the current iteration was formed in May 2022 through a merger that consolidated the histories of its predecessor leagues.

Operating as a closed franchise system, the league does not feature promotion or relegation due to the absence of a linked professional second division. The competitive structure divides the regular season into Eastern and Western conferences, culminating in a playoff series played in a best-of-seven format. A defining characteristic of the roster rules is the strict limitation to two foreign players per team, a policy designed to prioritise domestic talent. This focus on national players aligns with the league’s role as the primary qualification route for Venezuelan clubs entering the Basketball Champions League Americas.

The competitive landscape features teams such as Gaiteros del Zulia, who captured the 2025 title, ending a 24-year wait for the championship. Marinos de Anzoátegui holds the record for the most titles with 12, including the most recent 2026 championship. The number of participating franchises has fluctuated in recent years, with the 2025/2026 season planned for 13 or 14 teams. The governing body oversees these operations to maintain the sport's status as the top division of the Venezuelan basketball pyramid.
