Hong Kong beat Indonesia 71-60 in the opening round of the FIBA Asia Cup tournament on Friday. The hosts held their nerve on the back of a shaky run of results, while the visitors looked comfortable in their recent fixtures but could not close out the game. The score leaves Hong Kong at the top of Pool A after one game, Indonesia sitting second.
The difference came from beyond the arc. Hong Kong went for 27 three-point attempts and hit nine, while Indonesia tried 22 and found the net seven times. The extra shots from distance added up, even though both sides finished with similar field-goal totals and turnovers.
Indonesia pushed harder on the offensive glass, grabbing ten offensive rebounds to Hong Kong's eight. They also recorded four blocks against just one from the hosts, but the extra possessions did not translate into a lead. Hong Kong kept their side in it with 13 assists to Indonesia's 11, moving the ball when it mattered.
Both teams committed 19 personal fouls and turned the ball over 15 times each. The equal discipline suggests neither side lost its head, but the margin tells a different story. Hong Kong's free throws were sharper, converting nine of sixteen attempts compared with Indonesia's eight from thirteen.
Hong Kong's form before this match was uneven. They beat Malaysia 77-54 last Tuesday but had lost to Chinese Taipei and New Zealand in February, and suffered heavy defeats to the Philippines and Chinese Taipei in November. This win breaks that pattern, even if the opponents were weaker.
Indonesia's recent record looked steadier. They beat Singapore 80-54 on the same day as Hong Kong's victory, then moved through Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam in December before topping Singapore 87-48. The consistency carried them into this game, but not far enough.
The result means Hong Kong start with momentum, while Indonesia must regroup. One win each after the first round, but the hosts hold the edge on points scored and points against. The pool still has room for movement, and the table goes out of the window in these games when the form is this close.
