FIBA Asia Cup 2026/27

The FIBA Asia Cup is the premier men's national team basketball competition in Asia and Oceania. It sits at the top tier of continental competition for national squads. This distinction separates it from club competitions like the Basketball Champions League Asia.

The tournament was founded in 1960 by the Asian Basketball Confederation, which is now known as FIBA Asia. Historically, the event operated on a two-year cycle. It served as the primary pathway to the FIBA Basketball World Cup and the Olympic Games. A significant reform in 2017 changed this structure. The competition merged with the FIBA Oceania Championship, bringing teams from Australia and New Zealand into the fold. The cycle shifted to four years. Crucially, the tournament ceased to be a direct qualifier for global events, becoming a standalone continental championship.

The modern format features 16 teams split into four groups of four. Group winners progress directly to the quarter-finals. Teams finishing second and third in their groups enter elimination matches to secure the remaining quarter-final places. The tournament concludes with semi-finals and a final. There is no promotion or relegation, as spots are determined through regional qualifiers and host status.

Historical success shows distinct eras. China holds the record with 16 titles, with the most recent victory in 2015. The Philippines has won five titles, and Iran has claimed three. Since the rebranding that included Oceanian nations, Australia has dominated the field. They won the 2017, 2022, and 2025 editions. The 2025 final saw Australia defeat China in Jeddah. This unique identity defines the current competition, combining Asian powerhouses with Oceanian strength in a decoupled continental championship.
