FIBA AfroCan operates as a developmental platform for national basketball teams across Africa, distinct from the primary continental championship. The tournament was established in 2019 to address the scheduling gap created when FIBA Africa transitioned the AfroBasket to a quadrennial cycle. Its defining characteristic is the player eligibility requirement: squads must consist almost entirely of athletes who play within African domestic leagues, with a strict limit allowing only two expatriate players. This structure aims to strengthen local competitions and showcase home-based talent.
The competition currently features twelve nations, including Angola, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ivory Coast, and Kenya. These teams are split into four groups of three. The format dictates that group winners progress directly to the quarter-finals, while runners-up and third-place finishers contest qualification rounds for the remaining slots. Morocco claimed victory in the 2023 edition by defeating Côte d’Ivoire, following DR Congo’s success in the inaugural 2019 tournament against Kenya. The scheduled 2021 edition was cancelled due to the global pandemic.
Rwanda will host the next edition in 2027. Although separate from the AfroBasket, the AfroCan does not offer promotion or relegation between the two competitions. While the AfroBasket serves as the main pathway to the FIBA Basketball World Cup and the Olympic Games, the AfroCan focuses specifically on the growth of domestic leagues. The tournament has maintained its original name without a title sponsor since its inception.
