About

FIBA EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifiers

The tournament operates as the initial entry point for the FIBA European Championship 2029, sitting below the main qualifiers and the World Cup Pre-Qualifiers within the FIBA Europe pyramid. It functions not as a standalone championship but as a mandatory, multi-year qualifying pathway designed to facilitate progression for lower-ranked nations.

The structure relies on a multi-stage process involving small groups. Teams compete in a home-and-away round-robin format during the First Round, with participants divided into specific groups based on their standing. Winners from this stage advance to the Second Round, which also utilises a round-robin format. For instance, Austria competes in Group F of the Second Round, while other nations such as Kosovo, Armenia, Albania, and Azerbaijan contest Group C in the First Round. Ireland participates in Group A of the initial phase.

Promotion is achieved by winning groups in the Second Round, granting entry into the main EuroBasket 2029 Qualifiers where 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four. There is no relegation from this specific pre-qualifier structure as it serves solely as an entry point. This setup distinguishes the event from the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries, a separate biennial tournament founded in 1988. While the latter is a distinct competition with its own records—such as Andorra holding the record for most wins with six titles—the Pre-Qualifiers are integrated into the primary qualification ladder.

Kosovo does not participate in the Small Countries Championship despite its reputation in regional play; the nation joined FIBA in 2015 and immediately entered the main qualification paths. The Pre-Qualifiers thus provide a clear route for nations to reach the central stage of European basketball contention without the administrative separation of the smaller-tier tournament. Malta won the Small Countries Championship in 2026, highlighting the parallel nature of that distinct event. The focus here remains strictly on the pathway to the main qualifiers, ensuring that teams from the specified regions have a defined trajectory towards the European Championship.
