Clippers and Kawhi Leonard Face Federal Investigation
Brooklyn's US Attorney's office is probing the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard over fund transfers, ahead of the NBA's own salary-cap investigation results.
The Brooklyn US Attorney's office has opened a criminal investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard, before the NBA has even announced the findings of its own salary-cap inquiry into the club.
Prosecutors are examining the team's transactions and the movement of money to Leonard through intermediaries. At least one witness has already received a formal subpoena to give evidence as part of the criminal probe. The exact focus of the investigation has not been disclosed.
The Brooklyn office has a history with basketball cases. It handled the Tim Donaghy referee scandal in 2007 and is currently pursuing charges against Chauncey Billups.
The NBA's own investigation has already identified three counterparties that signed large sponsorship deals with Leonard that were, by all accounts, fraudulent, alongside the collapsed company Aspiration. Daktronics has said it received inquiries from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
