Mark Williams needs surgery on his left shoulder after tearing the labrum in training, and the Phoenix centre faces a long spell out.

The operation went ahead on Thursday. The 24-year-old is out for an extended period, with no return date set.

Williams had just finished his best season by games played. He appeared in 60 matches for Phoenix, averaging 11.7 points and 8 rebounds in 23.6 minutes, in what was his debut campaign at the club after a history of injury trouble.

The Suns handed him a three-year, $38m contract over the summer, a deal that now looks a good deal riskier with its centrepiece sidelined before the new season has started.
