Three-time NBA champion Dwyane Wade, 44, says he lost direction after retiring at 37 and is still searching for a new purpose beyond basketball.
Dwyane Wade, a three-time NBA champion, has said that retiring in 2019 brought on depression and left him without direction.
Wade is 44. He says basketball defined him from early childhood, and that nothing in ordinary life has replaced what the game gave him.
"I'm trying to find my calling. I thought basketball was my calling. And I know it was a huge, colossal part of it, but I finished with it at 37. And I have a whole life ahead of me... So the thing that gets me up every day is trying to find a new purpose," Wade said.
He described what follows retirement in blunt terms. "As soon as you retire, there comes a moment... a time of real depression. And how exactly you choose to deal with that depression will determine your next step. Since I was five, all I did was play basketball. And I was damn good at it. But now you step out of that familiar world, and you have to learn entirely new skills," Wade said.
