About the player
Born in Kano, he started out with Oasis FC and Footwork FC before moving to NK Lokomotiva Zagreb's youth setup in 2020. He broke into the senior side there and stayed for three seasons, racking up 79 league appearances and 14 or 15 goals.
His first Houston stint produced the clearest highlight of his career so far: the 2023 U.S. Open Cup. Aliyu scored on his club debut in the Round of 16 against Minnesota United and finished the run with three goals as the Dynamo went on to beat LAFC in the final. Across two seasons in Houston he made 66 MLS appearances, contributing 9 goals and 9 assists.
In April 2025, Columbus Crew traded for him, sending Houston $450,000 in guaranteed General Allocation Money with add-ons that could push the deal to $750,000; Houston also kept a sell-on percentage.
Just under a year later, in March 2026, Houston brought him back in a trade built around $250,000 in guaranteed GAM, with further performance-based money available. The second stint has started slowly: 13 league appearances and a single goal so far.
