About the player
Jacob Montes's path to Botafogo ran through American college soccer before it touched South America at all. Born in Lake Worth, Florida, he came up through the Portland Timbers academy and made his professional bow for the club's reserve side, Portland Timbers 2, in 2017. Rather than push straight into MLS, he took the college route, spending four years at Georgetown University, where he won the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship in 2019 and was named Big East Midfielder of the Year.
That form earned him a free-agent move to Crystal Palace in 2021, though he was farmed out on loan twice, first to Waasland-Beveren in Belgium, then to RWDM Brussels. Botafogo picked him up on a free transfer in August 2022, and he was part of the Botafogo squad that won both the Copa Libertadores and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 2024, though he did not feature in the Libertadores campaign and made just a single Brasileirão appearance that year, scoring against Juventude in April.
An ankle injury requiring surgery in February 2024 disrupted his season, and by July he had left Brazil, returning to RWDM Brussels on a free transfer. Internationally, Montes qualified through his Nicaraguan heritage and made his debut for Nicaragua in June 2023 against Panama.
