Mathieu Choinière

Mathieu Choinière is the product of an unusually complete apprenticeship at CF Montréal: he passed through every stage of the club's academy, having joined in 2011 after starting out at Celtix du Haut-Richelieu and CS St-Hubert, before signing his first professional contract in July 2018 and making his debut that same month. That kind of homegrown progression is rare, and it shaped the midfielder now playing for Los Angeles FC.

His years in Montreal brought team honours rather than personal ones: he was an unused substitute when the club won the Canadian Championship in 2019, then started the final when they retained it in 2021. Recognition on the individual side came later, with selection for the MLS All-Star Game in both 2023 and 2024. In July 2024 he left for Switzerland, joining Grasshopper Club Zürich, before a loan move back to MLS with LAFC in July 2025. That loan was made permanent in December 2025, when LAFC exercised the option to sign him outright.

Choinière made his senior debut for Canada on 13 October 2023, against Japan, and has since gone on to win 24 caps without yet opening his account with a goal. He has featured for his country at the Copa América in 2024, where Canada reached a third-place match decided on penalties against Uruguay, and he was also part of the squads for the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the FIFA World Cup.
