Alta IF's own supporters organise under the name Steinberget, a fixture at Finnmarkshallen, the indoor arena that serves as the club's winter home and holds around 1,240 spectators. Summer football moves outdoors to Alta Idrettspark, where the largest crowd on record, 3,000, turned out in 1995.

The club began life in 1927 as Elvebakken Idrettslag, taking the name Alta IF three years later. Blue and white have remained its colours since. Morten Gamst Pedersen came through it before building a career that took him far beyond Finnmark, and Mathias Normann followed a similar path in more recent years. Their departures say something about what Alta IF has become — a producer of players rather than a stage for them.

Regionally, dominance has been near-total. Alta IF has claimed the Finnmark Cup in all but a handful of seasons since the mid-1990s, a run stretching from 1996 through 2023 with barely a gap. That competition doubles as a qualifier into the Norwegian Football Cup, but the step up has never gone further than a quarter-final, and by some accounts not even that far. A Norwegian league title, or a run deep into the national cup, remains the one thing the club's history in Alta has not yet produced.
