The youth setup reached an FA Youth Cup final in 1988–89 and got as far as the semi-finals in 2011–12.
Barnsley St Peter's, as the club was known when Reverend Tiverton Preedy founded it in 1887, took the current name a decade later and joined the Football League in 1898. The switch from blue to the red shirts and white shorts still worn today came in 1904.
Where the first team plays at Oakwell, the U21s work out of Oakwell Training Ground, its covered stand holding 1,000. Bobby Hassell ran the academy from 2016, with Nicky Eaden joining as senior professional development coach in 2022 and Tom Harban coaching the U21s.
