In February 1998, Basingstoke Town met Wycombe Wanderers, then a Second Division side, in the FA Cup second round and beat them on penalties after a 2-2 draw, in front of a club-record 5,085 crowd at The Camrose.
The club itself was formed in 1896 out of a merger between Aldworth United and Basingstoke Albion, and Hampshire League titles either side of the First World War, more of them either side of 1970. The step up came in 1984-85, when Basingstoke won the Southern League Southern Division, and again in 2014-15, when a third-place finish in the Conference South stands as the highest league position the club has reached.
Paul Coombs remains the reference point for anyone judging a Basingstoke forward: 159 goals between 1991 and 1999.
The Camrose, their home for over a century, was lost to a development dispute in 2019, and after a season lodging at Winchester City's ground, Basingstoke settled at the Winklebury Sports Complex in October 2020. It holds 2,000, and it is where the club, still known locally as the Stoke, plays out its Hampshire rivalries with Havant & Waterlooville and Gosport Borough.
