Borussia M'gladbach II

The fixtures that draw the most attention in Mönchengladbach's reserve programme have never needed a proper name, and the II side of Borussia Mönchengladbach has never had to invent a reason to care about these games.

The team exists because the first side needs one, which is why its founding date is simply the parent club's, 1900, and why it carries the nickname Die Fohlen straight from the seniors. What separates this Foals side from most reserve teams is who has passed through it on the way up.

Trophies have come in the lower divisions, where reserve teams belong, but one of them opened a door the club only walked through once. Winning the 1996–97 Lower Rhine Cup sent the side into the DFB-Pokal for its only appearance in the competition, where Stuttgart beat them 1–0 in the first round. The Regionalliga West title in 2014–15 went further, into a promotion round for the 3. Liga, but Werder Bremen's reserve side ended that run.
