Bugesera

Nyamata's club knows Gicumbi FC on sight before kick-off, and local reporters still reach for the same phrase, "deribi ikomeye" — the big derby — whenever the fixture comes round. Neither side has needed a trophy to make the meeting matter.

Trophies have been the harder part for Bugesera FC. The club has never taken the Rwanda Premier League or the Rwanda Cup, and its clearest run at silverware ended in 2024, when it reached the final of the Rwanda Peace Cup and lost 2-1 to Police FC. Francis Haringingo was in charge for that run, arriving after Étienne Ndayiragije had resigned the post in early 2023.

The squad that got there leaned heavily on West African signings rather than any academy pipeline. Umar Abba, a Nigerian forward, finished the 2024/25 season as the league's top scorer before leaving for South Africa. A year earlier, Ghanaian defender Stephen Bonney had scored the goal that took Bugesera past Rayon Sports in the Peace Cup semi-final.

Home games are played at Stade Bugesera in Nyamata, which holds 10,000. The team takes the field in orange and black, colours close enough to the shirt that some reports simply call the players "the Oranges".

Statistics databases place the club's founding in 1984, in a district that has since given the team its name. Whatever the club looked like in its first seasons, it is that same fixture with Gicumbi that has carried its identity through to the league table it occupies now.
