Cassano Magnago Women

Handball in this corner of Lombardy, northwest of Milan, is remembered chiefly through one women's side that simply refused to lose. From the 1985-86 season through 1995-96, Pallamano Femminile Cassano Magnago held the Serie A1 title without interruption, eleven Scudetti in a row. Two Coppa Italia wins, in 1987-88 and 1994-95, filled the gaps between league seasons, and in Europe the team reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 1988 and 1989 before finishing among the continent's top eight in 1990. The club itself dates to 1974.

Marina Pellegatta and Brigitte Grandia were on court for all eleven of those titles; Greta Saporiti belonged to the same generation. Neven Andreašić, Marco Trespidi and Žarko Balić passed through as coaches while the run was being built.

White and amaranto have carried through since. Palazzetto Francesco Tacca, the club's hall, drew a crowd of 600 for a European Championship qualifier in 2010. Across town the fixture against Leno is still billed as the Derby Lombardo, sharpened by Casalgrande Padana as a second rival for the women's side.

The men's side has since taken over the headlines: a Coppa Italia win in 2024-25 was followed by the Serie A Gold championship in 2025-26, with Giacomo Savini, Gianluca Dapiran and Thomas Bortoli among the squad called into Italy's national team. Bianca Del Balzo now carries the women's colours forward.
