Promotion to the Bundesliga has been missed three times, in 1972, 1974 and 1992.
The club's roots lie in a merger of three Wehringhausen sports associations on 5 June 1920, one of them, Wehringhausener Turnverein, dating back to 1863; the handball department followed a year later. The current name arrived on 10 March 1962, when the club absorbed TV Eintracht Hagen.
Bernd Lückel is the name attached to the club's best years on the pitch: eighteen seasons at Hagen, more than 3,500 career goals, and the West German championship in 1971.
The most recent mark of progress came in 2014/15, when a runners-up finish in the 3.
