Kowloon has no indoor hall for the sport its own handball players train in — the national squad works out on an outdoor concrete playground on Choi Hung Road, and the Handball Association of Hong Kong, China was set up as an amateur body in December 1970.

The best Asian Games placing came in 2018 in Jakarta, seventh, and at the 2022 Games, played in Hangzhou in 2023, Hong Kong lost the group match to Qatar 18–36. No medal of any colour appears against the team's name in continental competition.

What changed the conversation was November 2025, at the National Games of China. Fifteen of the sixteen players in the squad gave up full-time jobs or took unpaid leave to prepare, and the team beat Guangdong 28–26 in the quarter-finals before falling to Anhui 21–24 in the semi-final and to Beijing 25–33 in the bronze match. Fourth place, for a squad built largely from amateurs, was the best the programme had produced. Head coach Hui Man-pong, also known as Xu Wenbang, took the team through that run.

The China men's team remains the fixture that matters most, with Macau providing the more regular regional test.
